Regardless of whether you know your stuff when it comes to SEO strategies, you are going to learn something new today. Here’s my top five major focus points with any page that I create.

IMPORTANT!

On Page Keyword Optimization

Permitting that you have chosen a keyword that is winnable in the search engines, and attracts qualified traffic, you will want to make sure that your chosen keyword/s are inserted on page in regular intervals of no more than once every 100 words. This literally is the most basic of all effective SEO strategies, but do be aware that too much can be seen as spam, and too little can be seen as being irrelevant. Make sure that your keyword placement involves correct use of the English language as well, just to keep you covered in the instance where a change in results triggers a human review at Google.

It is also very well worth while making sure that your main keyword appears in the title of your page as well, including in a few variable tags as well such as bold, and even a heading tag or two. This is optional, but for effective SEO, it can help make your page look more relevant and more natural at the same time.

The key here is to make sure that your page looks natural.

Keyword Anchor Links

What is Anchor Text? Its what we click...

Whilst doing your effective on page optimization, look for some opportunities to link out to other relevant pages using your keyword. Whilst this may not make sense to some of you as an effective SEO method, this is a great way to demonstrate relevance, and as a side benefit, helps your readers develop trust in you, as you are not trapping them on site. Remember to link out using the primary keyword, or a variation as such, plus include a title tag in the href link as well for further relevancy.

Image Optimization

I’ve seen some great results by optimizing my images for SEO. The process is simple. Just rename your images using your focus keywords or variants, and include keyword based alt tags for further relevancy. You can also link images off page as well if you would like for further. Just remember for the sake of effective SEO, you need to be natural here, and use a combination of your main keyword and other variants. Using your keyword too much in this instance can have an adverse effect.

Meta Tag Optimization

So… now that you have the basics of effective SEO down pat, and you have optimized your content, don’t forget to optimize your meta title, description, plus your meta keywords. If you are using WordPress, this can be added using the Yoast SEO plugin (which is free and highly recommended). Remember in this instance that optimizing your meta title and description is much more than being relevant. It is about selling your page in the search engines. Consider the keyword that you have chosen, and how you are going to use that in both a title and description to promise what the searcher is looking for, and deliver them to the page.

Sounds simple? It can be difficult, but with a little skill, this can in all essence turn a #2 ranked page into a #1 ranked page just based on the promise that is being made, and the pitch that is used.

As for keyword placement, for effective SEO, use the main keyword no more than once in your title, with a variant if you would like. In the description, use the main keyword no more than once, and use a variant if you would like.

Google Authorship

Details are still emerging about Authorship Markup from Google, which has to be hands down one of the most effective SEO techniques that you can use present day. In all essence, this is a new system in which Google now rewards reputable authors with a profile image next to their results in Google. If that doesn’t sound that tantalising to you, consider the impact of this benefit if exclusivity was enforced, and this was in fact a very difficult thing to earn, being given to only the best authors within certain keywords or markets.

Authorship Markup in action. See why this matters?

What this means is quite simple. People who are searching in Google for something now have people to turn to that have been identified by Google as people that they can trust. A profile image gives an author a huge amount of rank within their market, hence the new term “author rank” that you may have heard being thrown around a bit at the moment.

The key here is to be prepared. Will you be able to earn authorship? Who knows, but if you keep following the effective SEO strategies that I have been teaching, plus continue being the best author in your space, you will be treated like a king in Google’s eyes, and rewarded for your efforts. Final Words On Effective SEO?

I’ve had successes and failures from my work in SEO. I’ve found methods of SEO that are effective, and others that are not. You will too, and I have no doubt that it will frustrate you as it did me in my early days. It’s not that I dont know my stuff, it’s that effective SEO is an ever evolving game, and one that you must participate in consistently if you are going to succeed.

Consider that above all else, one of the most important areas that you need to focus on in your own SEO is the quality of your content, and what it does for your readers. If you focus on the quality of your content, then I can promise you that you will have little problem ranking highly for the keywords that you want to rank for.

It is about to become a very exciting time for good authors who know and practice good effective SEO, and having learned from me what you have today, you have no excuse to make good stuff happen.

That said, is Easy Video Player 2.0 really the kind of video player that is suited for everybody? Here’s the thing. If you don’t want to use your typical YouTube or Vimeo embeds on your website, the only way to host unbranded video on your website is going to be to host it yourself, and depending on the number of people that you will be serving video to, this can end up being quite pricey.

You can also add security to your embed codes making it even harder for people to copy your videos, plus lets not forget that you can also lock your video content to a specific domain, which is a feature that I can not live without.

Split testing junkies can also split test two different videos to see which one gets the desired result. Yes, the software also has its own built in statistics and sales tracking.

That said… as much as there are a ton of features, I do need to say at this point that what you are paying for in Easy Video Player 2.0 are the features. Sure, it looks great, but this really is an advanced player that doesn’t leave much room for competition.

In fact, I have seen a handful of “pay by the month” services that provide the same feature set plus hosting that charges in excess of a few hundred dollars a month. Its clear – if you want those features but not the monthly cost, then Easy Video Player 2.0 is a very worthwhile investment.

But what about the cheaper services that provide the player only? Would I suggest that you buy this over a monthly membership video player? To be quite honest, I would. I used to be a member of EZS3, and quite frankly, I found Easy Video Player 2.0 to be much more feature filled, much more reliable, easier to run, and most importantly, it is scalable.

You also have the option to host it yourself, which is what actually sold me on the software. Means that I am not relying on someone else to keep a service live for me.

Anyway, I ended up becoming somewhat of a master of this whole process. If you were to ask me today how many times I have had to migrate wordpress blogs from one place to another, I honestly wouldnt be able to tell you. I have become that familiar with the process. 

Let Me Show You How Its Done…

In late 2010, I was introduced to an extremely powerful standalone script (grab your copy here) that can create a carbon copy of your WordPress blog, ready for migration to a new domain or server, plugins and themes intact. There is beauty in this, and I will get to explaining why plugins (rather than scripts) that help you migrate WordPress are a super bad idea shortly… for the moment however, check out the info-graphic below to see how the script works:

That is how simple it is. Nothing else that needs to be done, you just simply copy the script to the root directory of your domain, access the script, and execute it. This creates a file that you can transfer to the new location, and expand within a few seconds. If you wanted to actually see it in action, just check out the video below (opens in a new window).

For those of you who are more tech savvy, you will also understand the benefits of this plugin being Ajax based. As all other plugins and scripts that claim to be able to do the same job are most often written in PHP, this puts much more strain on your hosting account, which results in a much lower success rate.

Now, I don’t know about you, but especially if I am using a script like this to be able to run backups, reliability is a big factor for me. That is why I only use WPtwin to migrate WordPress blogs (get your copy here).

Why Shouldn’t I Use Plugins To Do The Job?

Sure, there are a handful of plugins out there that do allow you to migrate WordPress (WPtwin is NOT a plugin mind you…) and create copies to install on other hosting accounts or domains, however, you need to remember that there are massive issues with 99% of these plugins.

This is nothing to do with the quality of how they are coded or pieced together, but more for the fact that in all cases, you are going to need the functionality of WordPress in order to be able to run both the copying and the migration stages.

Not only that, but if you are trying to migrate a blog that is of a fairly decent size, chances are that you are going to see some issues as the plugin is actually running inside a software package (WordPress) that is already using a fairly large amount of resources, leaving very little for a plugin to do its job.

This is not just an odd case here and there either. This is across the board with every single plugin that I have used.

Web Designers Always Tell You Otherwise

Here’s the thing. Web Designers make awesome looking websites. They are good at doing that. However, most web designers lack one important skill.

They are not marketers. They design websites that look great, but if you speak to most web designers and ask them about SEO or conversion optimization, they will look at you blankly.

So, here’s mistake #1. Dont pay to have a website created for you. At least, not yet anyway. Instead, lets create one from scratch.

Introducing WordPress

WordPress is a blog platform that can also support content based websites. It is super easy to set up, and has a huge amount of plugin support, plus themes as well.

Wondering what a WordPress based website looks like? You are looking at one.

The thing that makes WordPress so usable is the fact that it has an administration panel in the backend, so you dont need to edit code, or so any of that kind of junk just to get a page live. All you need to do is write content, and hit the publish button.

How To Install WordPress

If I try and explain how to install WordPress, it will end up confusing you, I am sure. Instead, I will show you how it is done.

WordPress does look quite bland when it is installed, however, there are a wide variety of free themes available, plus a few premium options which may suit those who are willing to invest a bit of cash in making their blog look a little more unique.

As such, my recommendations come as follows:

• Thesis Theme: The theme that this blog is built on
• Headway Theme: An easy to use alternative to Thesis
• WooThemes: One of the best collection of premium themes that I know of
• Theme Forest: Community developed themes, and quite cost effective
• OptimizePress: A sales letter theme for product launches

Other Platforms

Sure, you can create a website using many other platforms. Most people will prefer to start from scratch with a HTML template, or even other well known blog scripts. Whilst WordPress is arguably the easiest way to get started, here are a few resources that I have used myself over time:

• Joomla: Blog and Content based website script
• Theme Forest: Great for HTML templates and extremely cost effective

First things first. For those who arent all that familiar with how Affiliate Marketing actually works, I had better offer an overview.

What Is Affiliate Marketing?

When somebody creates some sort of product online, whether it be an information based product, software… it might even be a membership based program of some sort, they have the option of creating affiliate marketing opportunities for others, in the form of an affiliate program so that other people can promote their product for them, and earn a comission per sale.

When you sign up for an affiliate program for a product, or via one of the many marketplaces such as Clickbank or Shareasale, you will be given a link that is uniqe to you, which you can use to promote the product or service.

Now, lets say that you refer a visitor to click on that link, the software that powers that link will then plant a small piece of software within the users browser (otherwise known as a Cookie) that will report back to base when a specific page has been reached, more than likely the thankyou page once a transaction has been completed.

A such, you are credited a comission per sale that you refer. Sounds cool, but lets put this into perspective for a moment, just so that you know what you are getting yourself into.

Conversion Rate & Earnings Potential

Affiliate marketing opportunities are just that. An opportunity. You need to focus on metrics to get anywhere to start with though. Lets say that you receive 900 unique views per month to a specific post or page where you are promoting a product. If you have written great content that sells the product or a solotion (more on that in another post soon), then a number of people will click through to the sales page.

So, for the moment, lets say that out of 900 people, that 45 people click your affiliate link. That amounts to a fairly reasonable CTR (Click Thru Rate) of 5%.

Now, here’s the bit that can be a real stinger. Of those 45 people, the sales letter now has full control over them. It will either convert highly, or it wont convert at all. If the sales letter converts at 10 – 20%, then you will get 4.5 – 9 sales per month.

Now, if the product was a $100 product that paid a comission of 50%, then that wouldnt be a bad payout. That would be 250 – 450$ per month.

Most Affiliates Shouldn’t Need To Sell.

The biggest misconception about Affiliate Marketing is that it is all about selling.

This is wrong. What Affiliate Marketing is all about is giving qualified people the opportunity to click on an affiliate link. It is all about getting qualified traffic that either has the intent to buy, or traffic that has a problem that can be fixed by what you are marketing. In the last example, you are not selling a product. You are selling a solution, but this is an advanced technique in itself.

As an affiliate, your job will only ever involve finding people who are ready to buy, either by way of SEO, PPC, or other media buys, and getting them to click on your affiliate link.

Biggest No No’s Of Affiliate Marketing

I’m going to try hard not to rant here. I’ll do my best.

I am about to talk to you about two things that you are not to, as this could ruin your affiliate marketing opportunities right off the bat.

Number one is NEVER spam your social media lists with affiliate links. They are not targeted, and they probably dont want to buy from you. Prove your worth instead by sharing quality content.

Second involves your email list. Dont blast emails telling people that they need to buy this thing from you. Dont even tell that that its an affiliate link, thinking that they will be cool with that becuase of how honest you are. People fear affiliate links like the plague. Even Affiliate Marketers fear affiliate links.

If you are going to market to your list, there are options, but in 99% of cases, this is only ever going to be succesful if it involves hard core value driven marketing. If this interests you, then I recommend that you check out what Andre Chaperon has on offer. He is the best value driven marketer than I know of, and if I even attempt to teach what he teaches, I will fail.

Search Engine Physics

Each search engine is powered by an algorithm, which determines what is displayed to a user when they type in a search query. Most search engines guard this algorithm with their life, which you will fast learn is a good thing, as this protects the competative environment withint the search engines.

If everyone knew exacty how to best influence the search results, then there would literally be no competition at all that anyone could beat. This is also why search engines do not accept payment for an increase in how well a website ranks.

Enter Google.

As time goes on, you will find that Google is the search engine that you will rely on the most. It is the single most popular search engine online, and there are many ways that you can use its algorithm to be able to rank well for specific keywords.

Is Your Website indexed?

In order for Google to be able to rank your website, it must be included within their index. The process of getting your website indexed is usually the first process within your search engine optimization strategy, but before we get into that, what exactly  is an index? It is a massive database owned by Google, and various othersearch engines, that consists of a huge list of websites that Google and other search engines are aware of.

If you are not in an index, then you will not be ranked.

How this works is fairly simple. Each search engine has software scripts that they like to call “bots”. Each search engine has their own, and they like to give them affectionate names too.

Take the GoogleBot for example. Its primary job is to follow links, and report back to Google if there have been any changes on sites within its index. It reports back things such as new blog posts, changing of keywords on page, and most importantly, the keyword of the link (also called Anchor Text) that it followed to get to a page. More on this later on though…

As time goes on, GoogleBot will collect a huge amount of data about a website, its contents, and the links that are pointing towards it. This all makes Google’s job much easier when it comes to ranking a website.

Note - When GoogleBot visits a website, this is also referred to as “crawling”.

How Do Pages Rank?

This is through a series of factors contained within an effective search engine optimization strategy. The biggest factor is the number of baklinks pointing towards a domain or a page. In theory, the higher the count, the better the odds that you will rank well. This is not always the case however.

See, Google is a smart search engine. It is capable of identifying websites based on their type. Lets say, blogs for example. If you are competing for a phrase in Google, and you generate 10,000 backlinks to your page from blogs, then there is a good chance that you will not do all that well, as Google has systems in place to determine what looks natural, and what doesnt.

On top of that, they also have a group of “humans” who also check high performing websites, to ensure that they actually deserve that top spot based on the backlinks, and various other factors.

What Is PageRank?

PageRank, amongst various other things, is something that you really shouldnt worry about when drawing up your SEO strategy. It is something that is worth understanding though, and by me explaining how this works, I hope that you dont go on a priority mission to get as much PageRank as possible.

To cut a long story short, I have beaten many PR4 and above websites in the rankings using my methods, with pages that are lower than my competition in PageRank. It is an egotistical number that holds no other value apart from importance from a Google perspective.

I will give a much more complex explanation at a later date as to how PageRank works, but for now, all that you need to know is that it is accumulated by backlink types, where they are from, and a few other factors that Google keeps close to the chest.

That is all that you need to know about PageRank.

Backlink Types & Diversity

When linking to your website, the most important factors to remember are to diversify your link types. Whilst a large number will predominantly be anchor text based, using the keyword that you want to rank for, in order to appear natural to Google, you will also want to throw in a few variables.

Consider linking using your URL as the anchor text a few times, plus other related keywords that people may be searching for. This will also help you rank for other phrases, and boost your relevancy for a collection of phrases.

One of my best performing pages within my entire portfolio ranks simultaneously for about 7 or 8 buying phrases using this search engine optimization strategy alone.

For obvious reason, this has had a few of us SEO guys running around in an endless loop trying to figure out what the next move is. If we lose our highly valued #1 positions, then its game over.

Should we be worried? Some of you should, I know plenty who rely on article directories for an income, such as Squidoo and HubPages, that said, for the majorty of us who use only good solid methods of SEO, this update is not going to be something of huge concern at all.

At least, I know I have retained many of my #1 positons, and even gained a few quite easily.

So, What Is Good SEO?

I can explain this in a single line of text, but I feel that I need to elaborate, just so that we can be 100% clear.

Good SEO does not involve links from one source. This is where many article marketers go wrong. They dont worry about backlink diversity, instead many will simply generate links from article directories, and before they know it, 50 articles down, they are still ranking in the same position that they were before they started.

The reason for this is backlink diversity. Some time ago now, when I learned the foundations of SEO from my good friend David Jenyns, his words couldnt have said it better. Your job when it comes to ranking in Google is to replicate what happens in nature.

It is in this sense that you are going to want to be sure that before you do any kind of backlinking, you are going to want to have a plan in place that accounts for multiple link sources.

Lets run through some of the link sources below.

Article Marketing Backlinks

These are generated primarily from Article Directories such as Ezine Articles, Go Articles and Article Dashboard. In many cases, they are nofollowed, but this is not necesarily a bad thing, as it ads diversity to your link structure.

Blog Network Backlinks

These links are generated when you submit content with links intact to a network of websites through a service. These networks can be quite costly, so I do recommend that you know what keywords you are goign to target before investing in these services. The one that I do recommend strongly is Article Marketing Automation.

Blog Directory Backlinks

I take some time to read the main Internet Marketing forums, and the consensus is unanimous when it comes to Blog Directory backlinks. Most people believe that they are completely innefective. This could not be further from the truth. Whilst they wont really help you rank that well at all, they will provide you with backlink diversity. Links of different types and anchor text, along with follow and nofollow links. I never miss a monthly submission on my main sites.

Social Bookmarking/Liking

I have never seen a site maintain a consistent ranking through social bookmarking, or Facebook likes. I have seen some people get their knickers in a twist over this in the past few weeks, but the bottom line is simple. Yes, you can get indexed fast with social bookmarking, but the buzz will die down very quick, and it will take a combination of other methods to get to the #1 position again. That said, I recommend social bookmarking of all new content, just to further diversify your links, and make your overall structure look more natural to Google.

Blog Commenting Backlinks

Yes, suprisingly, this method can give some punch, if done right. The key is in finding good high quality blogs that are open for commenting. Also, dont be afraid to comment on blogs that nofollow their links. Again, this is all about link diversity. In the world that I live in, a NoFollow link holds just as much weight as a Follow link. To the contrary of popular belief, Google DOES count NoFollow links.

On this post about One Way Backlinks on my personal blog, I actually point out some useful search strings that you can use to find blogs to comment on. I will generally use this method to comment on around 10 blogs per week per phrase.

Summary

At the end of the day, a link is a link is a link, however, the more of them that you generate will not always mean a better result. Consider backlink diversity.
